Why warm-ups save studio time
In the booth, minutes matter. If your voice only opens up after twenty minutes, you spend booked time warming up while the engineer has mics and headphone mix ready. A focused warm-up at home or on the tram to Bilderdijkstraat 165 lets you start on performance, not mechanics.
That applies to singing, rap and spoken word. Rap stresses articulation and breath; voice-over needs a stable tone without an audible «ramp-up» every line. Book within our hours: Tuesday–Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturday 10:00–18:00. Closed Monday and Sunday. By appointment only..
Days ahead: rest and lyrics
Treat your voice as a finite instrument. Skip shouting at clubs, all-day calls without a headset and late karaoke if you can. If you must use your voice heavily, split it into short blocks with silence between.
Lock lyrics or script now. Rewriting in the booth burns €95 per hour faster than you think. Print marks for breaths and tricky consonants. Loop your beat until entries are automatic. Send instrumentals ahead via contact so we can load tempo and structure.
Night before and morning of
Sleep is the cheapest vocal upgrade. Short nights show in pitch, stamina and patience — yours and the engineer’s in our 20 m² control room. Limit alcohol; dehydration and sloppy consonants follow.
Pack water, lyrics, headphones if you rely on them, and lossless beats (WAV or AIFF). Check Tram 3 and 12 stop Bilderdijkstraat (2 minutes' walk). Bus 15 stop Bilderdijkstraat. From Amsterdam Centraal about 15 minutes on tram 3 towards Muiderpoortstation. so you are not rushed. We aim to reply within 1 business day; change details the day before, not mid-take.
Food, drink and local habits
Hydrate all day with room-temperature water. Herbal tea without menthol works for many; ice-cold drinks right before recording can tighten folds. Dairy makes some people phlegmy — common Dutch cheese sandwiches are fine after the session, not right before.
Eat lightly about two hours ahead: banana, oats, soup. Heavy fried food sits on the diaphragm. Moderate coffee is fine for most voices; a triple espresso minutes before take one is not.
Warm-up: ten to fifteen minutes
Start with the body: shoulder rolls, jaw release, gentle neck circles. Belly breath, long «s» or «f» exhales. Lip trills and ng-sirens in a comfortable range — do not force extreme highs.
Move to articulation: slow tongue twisters, then up-tempo for hip-hop. Sing or speak song sections in rising difficulty — not the highest chorus first. For spoken word, read a paragraph whispered, then normal, then slightly louder than your intended studio level.
In the booth at Oaklandledger
Our vocal booth is dry and controlled — ideal for placing space in the mix later. Adjust headphone level before chasing takes: too loud and you sing under; too quiet and you push. Many singers half-remove one earcup to hear body resonance; tell us and we rebalance.
Keep mic distance steady — about a hand to the pop filter — and lean back on loud peaks. Break every ten to fifteen minutes; silence beats «one more take» on fatigue. We store materials 12 months per agreement; see terms and conditions.
When to postpone
Sore throat, hoarseness beyond a day, or pain while phonating: do not push. Reschedule via contact; free cancellation up to 7 days ahead per our rules. Medical issues belong with a GP or ENT, not studio tips.
Unsure if you are session-ready? Send a short demo; we can suggest a €320 half day instead of extra hours. After tracking, delivering stems links to our Mixing service.
